Here at Night Fever we never underestimate the power of a movie soundtrack. Our club night is founded on the constitution of Kenny Loggins, and we bow at the alter of The Bee Gees.

But in the first of what may become a regular series (provided we, or you, don’t get bored) we take a look at a new movie soundtrack in more detail. Do I have your attention? Good. Here goes…

Continuing a successful period for comic book adaptations Dredd was released last week. However, he law enforcement officer billed as ‘JUDGE, JURY and EXECUTIONER’ was debuted in 1995.

So why the remake?

Well, critics and fans saw the movie as a missed opportunity. Lead actor Sylvester Stallone had this to say in an interview with Uncut in 2008. “What I learned out of that experience was that we shouldn’t have tried to make it Hamlet; it’s more Hamlet and Eggs.”

Ouch.

The soundtrack composer Alan Silvestri (responsible for the music on The Bodyguard and Forrest Gump) seemed a safe choice. But the result is a mish-mash of alt-rock (Cocteau Twins) and dance (Leftfield). The lead song from the movie was this below par goth-rock number by The Cure.

(FYI it’s buried away on disc three of their 2004 rarities box set)

In the same year U2 wrote the banger ‘Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kill Me, Kiss Me’ for Batman Forever. Which sums up how Judge Dredd missed the target.

So the 2012 version aims to offer redemption for fans.

To accomplish this screenwriter Alex Garland (author of The Beach) and film score composer Paul Leonard-Morgan have stripped the movie back and given the character a new lease of life.

Leonard-Morgan’s soundtrack is reminiscent of the 80s goth-electronica produced by Depeche Mode and New Order. Films such as The Running Man and Blade Runner appear to have been references for Leonard-Morgan, whilst the shadow of Daft Punk’s score for Tron: Legacy looms large.

Vitalic’s club-friendly ‘Poison Lips’, and Bobby Womack’s soul-infused ‘Jubilee’ feature in the movie but their omission from the soundtrack is deliberate. Likewise, the Skream remix of ‘In For The Kill’ by La Roux is restricted to the trailer.

The fine folks at the Odeon in The Printworks are screening Inglorious Basterds on Monday night as part of of their Flashback series. We couldn’t let this pass without sharing this amazing tune from the soundtrack by David Bowie. Maybe we should organise a Bowie themed night soon? The list of his songs in movies is endless… Zoolander, Clueless, Labyrinth to name but a few.
